How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the replacement key for audi a4 intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature audi a4 car key replacement of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find check here one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). 4. ECU
